FAU to trademark the Term “Between the Palms”

SicEmDawgs.com

FAU StadiumFlorida Atlantic University (FAU) plans to trademark the term “Between the Palms” in time for the opening of their new on-campus football stadium in the Fall of 2011.

“Between the Hedges” is synonymous with Georgia Bulldogs football and works well for UGA. I’m not sure how well “Between the Palms” will work for a smaller athletic program such as FAU, but it will give them some new marketing material.

Dr. Mary Jane Saunders, FAU’s current president, did postdoctoral work in Athens from 1982 to 1983. Although she stated that she didn’t come up with “Between the Palms”, it was her idea to trademark the term.

FAU’s new stadium will seat 30,000 and will have palm trees in both corners of the southern end zone. Although it’s not exactly like the hedges at Sanford Stadium, if you score a touchdown on that part of the field, you are “Between the Palms.”

The Owls currently play at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The Stadium is also used for home games by Fort Lauderdale High School and Dillard High School.
