Georgia adds four Non-conference Opponents to 2011-12 Basketball Schedule

SicEmDawgs.com

The Georgia Bulldogs have added four non-conference opponents to their 2011-12 basketball schedule, Sicemdawgs.com has learned. The four teams are Furman, Mercer, Winthrop and Wofford.

Georgia will open the 2011-12 season at Stegeman Coliseum on November 11, 2011 against the Wofford Terriers. The Bulldogs are 7-1 against Wofford with the only loss coming in Mark Fox’s first season.

After watching the Hoop Dawgs open their season on Friday night, you can catch a huge football game at Sanford Stadium the following day. Georgia hosts the defending national champion Auburn Tigers.

On December 23, 2011, the Furman Paladins will visit Athens. The two schools last met during the 2001-02 season. Georgia leads the overall series 21-4.

Georgia will host the Mercer Bears on December 20. The game was initially scheduled for December 22, 2011, but the contract with Furman was signed more recently and appears to have bumped the date. The Dawgs will also host the Bears in the 2012-13 season as the two schools signed a three-game contract.

The Bulldogs and Bears have met a total of 75 times, with the most recent meeting coming last season in Macon. Georgia won that game and leads the overall series 52-23.

The Hoop Dawgs will also host the Winthrop Eagles on December 27, 2011. It will be only the fifth time the two schools have played. Georgia leads the series 3-1, but lost at home to the Eagles 80-60 in 2003, Dennis Felton’s first year as head coach.

The addition of these four schools appears to have completed Georgia’s 2011-12 non-conference schedule. Back in April, UGA’s Kent Davison posted on the men’s schedule board “We need to buy a game for opening night, 11/11/11 to finish our schedule.” Georgia has done that with the addition of Wofford.

Exact dates remain unknown for Mercer at home and Colorado and Xavier on the road. And there is still no signed contract for the game at USC that was reported in April.

Georgia will also participate in the 2011 Progressive CBE Classic along with California, Missouri and Notre Dame. Two regional games will be played in Athens (opponents TBA) before moving on to Kansas City, Missouri to face one of the previously mentioned teams in the semifinal and championship or consolation.
