The Georgia Bulldogs are set to hire South Alabama defensive coordinator Kevin Sherrer, according to multiple reports.

Dawgs247 first reported the news of Sherrer’s impending hiring, which was later confirmed by FootballScoop and Macon.com.

It is not immediately known which position Sherrer will fill. Georgia has spots open for defensive line, inside linebackers, and outside linebackers. New defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt will coach the defensive backs.

Kevin Sherrer (Full Bio) and Jeremy Pruitt have a long history together, which Seth Emerson summed up:

They were teammates at Alabama, worked together at Hoover, and were both at Alabama in recent years. Pruitt was at Alabama from 2007-2012 (the first three seasons as a player development coordinator), and was at Hoover from 2004-06.

From 2010 through 2012, Sherrer was the director of player development at Alabama and helped lead the Crimson Tide to back-to-back national championships. Prior to his stint in Tuscaloosa, Sherrer was the defensive coordinator at Hoover High School.

South Alabama, which plays in the Sun Belt Conference, finished 50th in the nation in Total Defense according to the NCAA. They were also ranked 55th in Rushing Defense, 56th in Passing Yards Allowed, and 31st in Turnover Margin (gained 18 turnovers total).

Interestingly, Georgia was scheduled to play South Alabama in 2014, but had to trade the game to South Carolina due to a conflict. In return, the Bulldogs got a game against Troy.
