Reports indicate that Mark Richt and the Georgia Bulldogs are targeting Kirby Smart for their open Defensive Coordinator position. Smart currently holds the same position at Alabama.

Smart was a four-year letterman at defensive back for the University of Georgia from 1996-99. His biography is located at RollTide.com. Listed below is his coaching career:

  • 1999 – Administrative Assistant, Georgia
  • 2000 – Defensive Backs Coach, Valdosta State
  • 2001 – Defensive Coordinator, Valdosta State
  • 2002-03 – Graduate Assistant, Florida State
  • 2004 – Defensive Backs Coach, LSU
  • 2005 – Running Backs Coach, Georgia
  • 2006 – Safeties Coach, Miami (NFL)
  • 2007 – Assistant Coach, Alabama
  • 2008-P – Defensive Coordinator/Secondary, Alabama

Kirby Smart would likely be a “home-run” hire for the Dawgs, as he is currently one of the hottest defensive coordinators in college football. The Crimson Tide are ranked second overall in the FBS in total defense and are ranked first overall in scoring defense. The Tide have gained 26 turnovers on the season, compared to 10 for Georgia.

On a side note, Smart won the Broyles Award today, which goes to the nation’s top assistant coach.
