The Latest on the Defensive Coordinator Search

SicEmDawgs.com

It’s been a whirlwind last couple of days in the Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator search. Virginia Tech’s Bud Foster was the latest name to be rumored for the open position.

Foster, currently the defensive coordinator at Virginia Tech, was contacted by UGA but has decided to remain with the Hokies. This story broke yesterday, and it’s unclear when Foster was contacted. If it was recently, it may mean that Mark Richt has moved down the list of candidates.

If Foster was contacted last week, it may mean that Foster was Richt’s top choice. Or it could mean that Richt was simply gauging the interest of the veteran coordinator. It does appear that a formal offer was not made.

On Friday, another name popped up: Vic Koenning. Koenning is currently the DC at Kansas State. He was formerly the DC at Clemson from 2005 to 2008, but was not retained when Dabo Swinney took over for Tommy Bowden.

Koenning is an “intriguing candidate” as the Georgia Sports Blog says. He’s got very good numbers and he was formerly the head coach at Wyoming. There has been some backlash on the message boards regarding VK, primarily due to Kansas State giving up 66 points to Texas Tech, 42 to Oklahoma and 38 to Missouri this season.

Alabama’s Kirby Smart remains in the conversation and appears to be at the top of the wish list for most Georgia fans. Other names mentioned include Tyrone Nix and Brian Van Gorder, but to date neither has been officially contacted.

So the search continues and with the Internet and message boards, the rate of information flows quickly. How do you think this will play out?
