Bulldogs begin preparations for Troy

Georgia Bulldogs

ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 13-ranked Georgia football team returned to the Woodruff Practice Fields on Monday with a 90-minute workout in shorts.

The Bulldogs (1-1, 0-1 SEC) will step out of conference again this week as they entertain Troy (0-3, 0-0 Sun Belt). The game will kick off at noon and will be televised on the SEC Network.

Monday’s practice was the first since the Bulldogs dropped a 38-35 decision to South Carolina last Saturday.

“Nobody likes to lose, but I didn’t see anyone hanging their heads out there today,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “The guys got right back to work and were focused today on what they needed to do. Troy is a fine opponent with talented players on both sides of the ball. We’ve got to work hard this week on our fundamentals and continue to correct our mistakes.”

Richt said the captains for the Troy game will be center David Andrews and tailback Todd Gurley on offense, defensive lineman Toby Johnson on defense, and tailback Sony Michel on special teams.

In other news, it was announced on Monday that the Georgia-Tennessee game on Sept. 27 in Athens will be televised by ESPN with kickoff set for noon. Georgia is 31-30-1 on ESPN all-time, including this season’s victory over Clemson.

Georgia and Troy have met only once in history, with the Bulldogs posting a 44-34 win in 2007 in Athens. Richt is 53-10 overall and 36-1 in Athens against non-conference opponents.

All four of Georgia’s regular-season non-conference foes will come to Sanford Stadium this year. Georgia opened the season by defeating Clemson. Following the Trojans’ visit, the Bulldogs will end the regular season against Charleston Southern on Nov. 22 and Georgia Tech on Nov. 29.

This season, the Trojans are 0-3 after falling to UAB, Duke and Abilene Christian. Troy is averaging 20.7 points game and is giving up 40.0 each contest. Brandon Burks is the Trojans’ leading rusher with 104 yards, while Chandler Worthy (157 yards) and Burks (121 yards) each have 12 catches. Brandon Silvers, who shares quarterback duties with Dontreal Pruitt, has gone 48-for-72 for 509 yards and one touchdown. On defense, Femi Odaibo has two interceptions.
